New manager Steve McMahon succeeded in getting Swindon back into Division One on his first try, as they won the Division Two championship in 1996. The club then appointed and sacked five managers over ten years, during which time they were relegated back into Division Two. A special Swindon Town third kit was introduced for the 1996-97 season and was coloured "Petrol green" in honour of the then sponsors Castrol, which proved to be a very eye catching jersey.
